The mother, in her 50s, and her daughter, in her 20s, stayed with us for three days and experienced Japanese home cooking and everyday life in Tokyo.

A Food Culture Experience That Begins with Grocery Shopping
One of the things the two guests were especially looking forward to during their stay was choosing ingredients at a Japanese supermarket. Soon after arriving, they went to a nearby store and took their time looking at vegetables, fish, tofu, seasonings, and other items. Ingredients they do not usually see in the United Kingdom, as well as the way products are displayed in Japanese stores, seemed fresh and interesting to them. I still remember how they smiled and said, “It’s interesting just to look around.”

They were particularly interested in basic seasonings such as miso, dashi, and soy sauce. While they were surprised by the variety, they carefully chose each item, saying that these must be essential for creating the flavor of Japanese home cooking.
